As I mentioned several weeks ago the Order of the Arrow is Boy Scouts honor society known as the Brotherhood of Cheerful service. You will be choosing troop 290 representatives in the coming weeks.
In April 2010 the largest oil spill in US history known by the name of the drilling platform it started on, Deepwater Horizon, occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. It severely impacted the economy of the region. Oysterman, fisherman and shrimpers (remember Bubba Gump and boiled shrimp, shrimp gumbo, Creole shrimp?) were shut down for years and the oil industry severely cut back. In 2014 they were still reeling from the effects. In a documentary, they followed an older man as he served his community whether it was distributing food or clothing or getting the word out about how to file insurance claims.
Here how he summed it up while preparing a spaghetti dinner for over 350 people in his Church’s kitchen.
There must be a reason God gave me a second chance. See, I had five bypasses in 2005. There’s a joy for doing this. You ain’t supposed to get paid for everything you do. Let some of it be a blessing. If you can’t give a blessing, you’re a mighty poor man.
While he didn’t have money to donate to his community, he gave something much more valuable, service.
